    North Carolina State University is currently seeking a qualified Occupational Health Manager to work in the Environmental Health and Safety Department on our campus in Raleigh, North Carolina.

    NC State University is the largest and most diverse research institution in the state of North Carolina. The university is comprised of 2110 acres on the Raleigh campus, plus over 100,000 acres in research and extension farms and other facilities throughout the state of North Carolina. Its population of 33, 879 students and 2132 faculty include more than 2500 graduate students supported on research and teaching appointments in the 68 established research and service centers. The 1334 acre NC State Centennial Campus complex includes a mix of wet lab and office incubator space for startup companies as well as buildings co-inhabited by university departments and industrial tenants. This complex and diverse environment, particularly the heavy concentration of research centers and institutes, provides a challenging and interesting work environment for health and safety professionals.

    Minimum Requirements

    Four year degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Must also have working knowledge of regulatory requirements, including knowledge and experience with OSHA regulations. Applicants should have excellent oral and written communication skills and computer capabilities.  

    Preferred Experience

    Masters degree in biological sciences, industrial hygiene, microbiology or related applied science required, plus 5 years of progressive experience in industrial hygiene or biological safety. Professional

    certification ( Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Biological Safety Professional, Registered Biosafety Professional) desirable; experience in research environments and with animal research is preferred . Familiarization with CDC and NIH guidelines is a plus. Professional certification ( Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Biological Safety Professional, Registered Biosafety Professional) desirable, but not required.

    About the Position

    Consistent with the goals and objectives of the Environmental Health & Safety Department, the Occupational Health Manager manages a comprehensive occupational health program to provide occupational health and regulatory compliance services in support of research and maintenance and animal care activities. Responsibilities include development and administration of programs and procedures for a comprehensive occupational health program; Working under the direction of the Director of Environmental Health and Safety, the Occupational Health Manager administers, critiques and recommends for improvement, and modifies as necessary, the following programs and duties:

    · Ensures program compliance with regulatory laws and best practices related to occupational

    health.

    · Assesses risks pertaining to the use of chemicals or physical agents that may cause adverse

    health effects. Makes recommendations to control these risks. Advises faculty and staff regarding

    occupational health issues.

    · Reviews research protocols, providing recommendations on risk control techniques such as

    engineering controls, personal protective equipment and recommended operating procedures.

    · Co-administers the university hearing conservation program with Student Health Services.

    · Co-administers the university medical surveillance program with Student Health Services.

    · Administers the university respiratory protection program.

    · Conducts audits/inspections of university laboratories and other workspaces. Documents

    findings, prepares reports and communicates findings to responsible management.

    · Develop and present occupational health safety training as well as assist with other EH&S

    training efforts.

    · Participates in review of animal experimentation protocols to identify occupational health

    concerns and provide appropriate recommendations.

    · Reviews plans for new laboratory building construction and renovations of existing facilities as

    needed.

    · Develops emergency response protocols with campus and outside groups and responds to

    hazardous materials incidents and emergencies as needed to support the EHS emergency

    response team during and after-hours.

    · Provides other services as assigned by the Environmental Health and Safety Director.

    Position:    Construction Safety Specialist

    Salary:      $60K to 70K  federal tax free, plus free housing, food, r/t air fare and r/t air fare for R&R to  Philippines or Singapore.

    Length:       Full time permanent,  contracted one year at a time.

    Duties:    Responsible for construction related activities throughout the Base Operation Support contract with the military.  Exerience in managing construction projects and maintenance and repair activities in accordance with the contractor s Safety and Health Program.

    Develop and coordinate each aspect of the contractor s safety program with each annex and conduct employee safety programs by training, safety meetings, and coordinate safety for each construction project.  Evalulate and implement safe work practices andn procedures and identify unsafe work practices/conditions/equipment in accordance with OSHA l904l.

    Position Summary:
    Responsible for several facilities in North America, primarily in the southern region with 25% travel. Review, evaluate, and analyze work environment and design proper procedures to control, eliminate and prevent disease or injury caused by chemical, physical, or ergonomic factors. In addition, develop training programs for all sites. Ensure compliance with company policies and procedures.

    Position Responsibilities (includes, but is not limited to) :
    • Conducts Health & Safety training
    • Conducts Worker’s Compensation Training
    • Coordinate training and training programs to ensure attainment of employee skill objectives.
    • Insure attainment and maintenance of safety objectives with local municipalities.
    • Review, revise and create, as required Job Safety Analysis for manufacturing facilities.
    • Participate in evaluation, reporting and closure of Worker’s Compensation cases.
    • Reviews all injury/illness claims with plant EH&S to ensure proper protocol.
    • Monitors and reports monthly safety alerts, SPI scores and EX3 requirements.
    • Maintain required documentation for OSHA, CCOHS, WMIS and WSIB requirements.
    • Coordinate insurance risk loss control visits and surveys by Insurance vendors.
    • Compile and maintain all data related to work related injury/illness
    • Conduct walk through audits at all facilities to eliminate unsafe acts and or conditions.
    • Ensure plant safety meetings are being conducted monthly as well as employee safety committees.
    Qualifications/ Education/Experience Required:
    • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time
    • In depth knowledge of U.S. environmental, health & safety and workers’ compensation laws and regulatory requirements
    • Fundamentals of fire protection and loss prevention
    • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal
    • Excellent facilitation and presentation skills
    • Ability to lead and work with teams
    • Ability to interface with all disciplines and levels within the company
    • Excellent understanding of manufacturing processes
    • Bachelor’s Degree in Safety/Industrial Hygiene or related field.
    • 7 – 10 years environmental, health and safety experience in manufacturing environment
    • Preferred:
    • CSP or CIH desired
    • Working knowledge of Canadian environmental, health & safety and workers’ compensation laws and regulatory requirements
    • OSHA 10 certified
    • OSHA 30 certified
    • NFPA 70 compliance experience.
